Patio & Alfresco Slabs Sydney

An alfresco or entertaining slab is a large open pour, and the two things that matter are that it finishes flat and that it drains away from the house.

Coloured concrete is available if you want the slab to be the finished surface rather than a base for pavers or tile. On a coloured pour the sealer goes on three weeks after the concrete, not the same week.

Worth knowing

How we approach patio slabs

Sealer at three weeks on coloured concrete

A coloured slab needs to cure before it is sealed. Sealing at a week traps moisture in the slab and the finish clouds.

Graded away from the building

A flat-looking slab still needs fall. Ponding against the house is the most common complaint on entertaining areas and it is set at formwork stage.

How a project runs

Seven stages

The sequence is the same on every project we quote, patio slabs included.

  1. 01

    Demolition and excavation

Existing slab removed, ground opened up and a skip brought on site. Spoil is carted away rather than left at the frontage.

  2. 02

    Levelling and base

Base graded and compacted. No quantity of concrete corrects a poorly prepared subgrade.

  3. 03

    Formwork

Boxed and pegged to finished levels, with falls set so water drains away from the building.

  4. 04

    Steel fixing

S72 reinforcing mesh raised on plastic chairs so it sits within the slab, with abelflex to the perimeter.

  5. 05

    The pour

32MPa at 20mm aggregate, pumped where access requires it. Driveways are poured at 130mm.

  6. 06

    Finishing

Screeded, floated and hand finished while the concrete is still green.

  7. 07

    Saw cutting

Cut early to control where the slab relieves. Every slab moves; the cuts determine where.
