A house slab has to be set out accurately, steel fixed to the engineer's drawings, and poured to Australian Standard. There is no room to correct it afterwards — everything above it is built off those dimensions.

We work from the engineering drawings supplied with the build, and pump where the truck cannot reach the pad.

How we approach house slabs

Set out is checked before the steel goes in

Dimensions are confirmed against the drawings at formwork stage. A slab that is out at set-out stays out for the life of the building.

Pumped where access is tight

On a battleaxe block or a narrow frontage the truck cannot reach the pad. A pump is included in the quote rather than raised as a variation on the day.

How a project runs

Seven stages

The sequence is the same on every project we quote, house slabs included.

Demolition and excavation

Existing slab removed, ground opened up and a skip brought on site. Spoil is carted away rather than left at the frontage.

Levelling and base

Base graded and compacted. No quantity of concrete corrects a poorly prepared subgrade.

Formwork

Boxed and pegged to finished levels, with falls set so water drains away from the building.

Steel fixing

S72 reinforcing mesh raised on plastic chairs so it sits within the slab, with abelflex to the perimeter.

The pour

32MPa at 20mm aggregate, pumped where access requires it. Driveways are poured at 130mm.

Finishing

Screeded, floated and hand finished while the concrete is still green.

Saw cutting

Cut early to control where the slab relieves. Every slab moves; the cuts determine where.
