Why concrete fails early
Why concrete driveways crack
Most of the failed driveways we are asked to look at went wrong for one of the following reasons. None of them are misfortune.
01
Insufficient depth
A driveway carrying vehicle loads requires 130mm. A great many are poured at 85 to 100mm — a material saving that presents as cracking within the first few summers.
02
Reinforcement laid on the subgrade
Steel performs only when it sits within the slab. Placed directly on the ground and poured over, it finishes along the bottom face contributing almost nothing. Plastic chairs are a negligible cost and the entire difference.
03
No control joints, or cut too late
Every slab moves as it cures. Saw cutting early gives that movement a defined line to follow. Without it the concrete determines its own line, and it is rarely a straight one.

How a project runs
How we pour a concrete driveway
The sequence is the same on every project we quote, whether it is a three metre side path or a full driveway and crossover.
Request a Quote- 01
Demolition and excavation
Existing slab removed, ground opened up and a skip brought on site. Spoil is carted away rather than left at the frontage.
- 02
Levelling and base
Base graded and compacted. No quantity of concrete corrects a poorly prepared subgrade.
- 03
Formwork
Boxed and pegged to finished levels, with falls set so water drains away from the building.
- 04
Steel fixing
S72 reinforcing mesh raised on plastic chairs so it sits within the slab, with abelflex to the perimeter.
- 05
The pour
32MPa at 20mm aggregate, pumped where access requires it. Driveways are poured at 130mm.
- 06
Finishing
Screeded, floated and hand finished while the concrete is still green.
- 07
Saw cutting
Cut early to control where the slab relieves. Every slab moves; the cuts determine where.
