Concrete Footpaths & Side Access Sydney
Side access down the boundary, a wraparound path to the rear yard, a path from the driveway to the front door — these are the runs a lot of concreters would rather not quote, because they are narrow, awkward to get a machine into, and most of the finishing has to be done by hand.
They are a large part of what we do. The last wraparound we completed was set out by hand around a curved garden bed on a new build, and poured in two stages so the finish held across the whole run.

How we approach footpaths
Narrow runs are hand finished
A power trowel does not fit down an 800mm side access. Those runs are screeded and floated by hand, which is slower and the reason many quotes come back high or not at all.
Falls set away from the building
A path against a wall has to drain away from it. We set the fall at formwork stage rather than trying to correct it in the finish.
How a project runs
Seven stages
The sequence is the same on every project we quote, footpaths included.
- 01
Demolition and excavation
Existing slab removed, ground opened up and a skip brought on site. Spoil is carted away rather than left at the frontage.
- 02
Levelling and base
Base graded and compacted. No quantity of concrete corrects a poorly prepared subgrade.
- 03
Formwork
Boxed and pegged to finished levels, with falls set so water drains away from the building.
- 04
Steel fixing
S72 reinforcing mesh raised on plastic chairs so it sits within the slab, with abelflex to the perimeter.
- 05
The pour
32MPa at 20mm aggregate, pumped where access requires it. Driveways are poured at 130mm.
- 06
Finishing
Screeded, floated and hand finished while the concrete is still green.
- 07
Saw cutting
Cut early to control where the slab relieves. Every slab moves; the cuts determine where.
